Running Gear

You really only need a pair of shoes to start running, but a selection of proper running gear can make running more comfortable and more fun.

Running Shoes

A good pair of running shoes is the most important piece of running gear. Before you even start running, you need to get a new pair of good running shoes. The most important step is going to a local running store (or other shoe store that knows about running), where experienced staff (preferably who are runners!) can fit you with the appropriate shoes for your feet. Having the proper running shoes will make a big difference in making sure you are comfortable when running… and more importantly, help prevent running injuries that could be a major setback when it comes to running a 5k!

Running shoes generally fall into three categories:

  • Neutral shoes: for people with “normal” feet, strong ankles, and normal to high arches.
  • Stability shoes: for those who need a bit more support, in particular to avoid mild to moderate overpronation (a problem where your feet roll inward too much when you run)
  • Motion control shoes: for folks who need the most support to avoid moderate to severe overpronation

A final note: this information is meant to be helpful, but is only scratching the surface of all the ins and outs of running shoe selection and fit.  If at all possible, you should visit a local running store to get help choosing the right shoe.
